Recent Health Protection Agency statistics show that HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) rates among under 24-year-olds have been increasing for the past 10 years and now represent 5% of all new cases . STIs can be very dangerous. Some show no symptoms. Some can make you infertile. Some are incurable, though all can be improved with treatment, especially if they are identified and treated quickly.

You get STIs through having "unprotected sex" (sex without a condom) with someone who already has an STI. Because many STIs have no obvious symptoms, you can't tell if someone is infected.

Test 1
Urethral swab for lower genital tract infections - mycoplasma and urea plasma

Test 2
Swab or alternatively first catch urine sample tests for gonorrhoea and chlamydia. First catch urine sample- ideally should not pass urine at least 3 hours prior to testing.

Test 3
Blood test-hepatitis b, HIV 1 AND 2 antibodies, VDRL/TPHA for syphilis

HIV TEST AND RESULTS

The test employed at malmin medical to diagnose HIV is called the HIV-Duo.
This tests for HIV 1 and 2 antibodies and the p24 antigen for earlier diagnosis. Results available within 4 hours-either through follow up appt with physician or via telephone consultation. The test will usually become positive from 4 weeks after contact.

If the initial test is positive we will go on to confirm result using 3 independent techniques and if these are positive we will review the patient in surgery and refer to a HIV specialist.

If earlier diagnosis is required, the HIV-1 proviral DNA test can be done from day 10 post exposure, but the test will only apply to HIV-1 infections. This test costs £220

To confirm all negative results pts are encouraged to re-test at 3-6 months.

RAPID HIV TEST
The rapid HIV test allows for results within 60 seconds via a simple prick of blood from the finger tip. We use the Insti HIV test produce by BioLytical laboratories. This test is very accurate from 90 days post Contact for detecting HIV antibodies.
