The problems are often associated with sun damage from over-exposure to the sun or sunbeds and are very common in the UK.
Treatment is suitable for the face or body and can diminish the appearance of pigmentation problems such as sun spots, age spots, liver spots and freckles.
Freckles, age spots and other minor blemishes are caused by melanin, a substance which gives our skin its colour. When melanin gathers in one spot, it appears as a discoloured area. The wavelengths of light produced by laser technology are designed to be absorbed by these pigmented areas; the powerful light then “shatters” the pigment, causing it to be dispersed by the body’s lymphatic system. The spots will gradually disappear.
The treatments are specially designed for patient comfort and are safe and effective for all skin types, including dark skin.
The hormones released during pregnancy can result in an increased production of pigmentation, causing dark patches of skin to appear on the face or the body. While these changes in colour are harmless, they can cause cosmetic problems, particularly if they do not fade after the baby is born.
Once they have appeared, these patches of pigmentation often reappear with subsequent pregnancies, and exposure to sunlight can cause them to darken rather than fade. If you have developed hyper pigmented patches during your pregnancy, it is important to protect the affected skin from exposure to the sun. Make sure you use an effective sun block in order to prevent further darkening of the patches.

Unlike traditional ablative laser resurfacing, which burns the outer layer of skin, this new generation of treatment does minimal damage to the outer skin layer and thus minimises redness and downtime. The ablative element of the laser happens at a deep-skin layer and uses heat to stimulate collagen production. This triggers the body’s natural healing process to stimulate growth of new healthy skin tissue.
Hyperpigmentation, Freckles and Age spots.
By exposing a pigmented lesion or dark spot to short pulses of visible light, the highly concentrated area of pigment know as melanin can shatter. The pigment is then absorbed by the body, making the dark patches less visible or completely destroying them.
Depending on your skin type (and the lesion being treated) some redness and swelling may be visible, but will usually subside around 48 hours after treatment. A normal response is that the treated area may appear darker and flake around 5-7 days later. During treatment, some patients may feel a mild discomfort, but there isn’t any need for numbing agents or anaesthetic. The treatment is quick and effective, usually requiring around 3-6 sessions once every 4-6 weeks.
It depends which area is being treated but typically the treatment times range from 30-60 minutes. Single lesion sessions are 30 minutes, combined lesion sessions are 45 minutes and full face treatments are 60 minutes.
